How to Fix Leaking Roof Shingles
- 1). Lift up the bottom of the damaged shingle. Using a putty knife, slather roofing cement onto the bottom of the shingle, directly underneath the tear. Apply the roofing cement as instructed on the product's label.
- 2). Press the shingle down so that it can bond with the underlying shingle. Hammer a roofing nail into both sides of the tear.
- 3). Examine the shingle for curled corners. If the shingle's corners are curled, spread roofing cement underneath the curled corners.
- 4). Press the shingle's corners down so that they can bond with the underlying shingle. Secure each of the shingle's corners to the roof with a roofing nail.
- 5). Spread roofing cement over the tear and roofing nails to prevent any future leaks.
- 6). Inspect the gutter for accumulated colored granules that have loosened from the shingles and slid down the roof. Collect a handful of these granules and sprinkle them onto the roofing cement to camouflage the repairs.
- 7). Allow the roofing cement to fully cure as instructed by the manufacturer.
