How to Test an 85mm f/1.4 Nikon Lens
- 1). Attach the lens by inserting the smaller end into the camera and rotating it left until it locks into place. Remove the lens cap.
- 2). Set the lens to manual or auto focus by pushing in the silver button on the lens and turning the barrel ring to either "M" or "A."
- 3). Open the aperture to the widest setting, which is f/1.4. Consult your specific camera's manual for instructions on how to do this.
- 4). Place the subject about 10 feet in front of a busy background, such as a brick wall forest. Position yourself so the shot can be composed.
- 5). Press the shutter button halfway to gain focus. In manual mode, rotate the large lens barrel to adjust the focus.
- 6). Push the shutter button fully to take the photo. Repeat this process with different background types and different apertures to discover the limitations of this lens.
