What Are the Cardinal Sins?

    Pride

    • Pride is considered to be the first of the cardinal sins. Vanity and conceit are elements of pride and the belief that one's achievements or accomplishments makes them superior to others. Comparing yourself to others is a form of pride and the opposing virtue is humility.

    Envy

    • Envy is the act of coveting someone's possessions or state of being. Feeling displeasure or resentment over someone else's belongings, success, accomplishments or happiness is the sin of envy. Envy has to do with insecurity or discontent of one's own present state. The opposing virtue of envy is love.

    Lust

    • Lust is typically associated with an overindulgence of sex or sexual desire, but can also be the craving for excessive power or even fame. It is seen as a lack of self-control and moral reprobation and considered to be a self-destructive drive for pleasure. The opposing virtue of lust is self-control.

    Gluttony

    • Gluttony is the act of over indulgence, particulary with food. However, gluttony is also considered to be the over-consumption of anything including entertainment, possessions or people's time. It is taking more than you require. The opposing virtue of gluttony is temperance.

    Wrath

    • Wrath is the sin of those who choose anger over love. To act without compassion or kindness falls under the sin of wrath. Being impatient with others' faults also falls into this category. Extreme indignation or exasperation is considered to be wrath. The opposing virtue of wrath is kindness.

    Greed

    • Greed is the sin of acquiring and hoarding wealth, but it goes beyond money. It is also keeping others from getting proper recognition or offering help. Greed is also known as avarice. The opposing virtue of greed is generousity and to give without the expectation of receiving anything in return.

    Sloth

    • Sloth is also known as laziness and is the sin of physical or mental inactivity. It's not limited to physical laziness but also a lack of acquiring spiritual knowledge or self-awareness. Avoiding any kind of work falls under the sin of sloth. The opposing virtue of sloth is zeal, which is energy and enthusiasm for something.
