How to Replace a Toilet Flange on a Sewer Pipe
- 1). Cut into the existing sewer line at a point 8 inches or more away from the 90-degree elbow joint. Then remove the screws from the flange. The flange and elbow joint can then be pulled up through the hole in the floor and placed to one side. Remove the burrs from the end of the existing sewer line with a tradesman's knife, and clean the end of any dirt.
- 2). Insert the flange into the hole so that the lip with the screw holes rests on the floor. Glue the bottom of the flange, as well as the end of the elbow joint. Push the elbow joint up onto the flange, holding it for at least 30 seconds. Turn the elbow joint so that it faces the existing sewer line.
- 3). Glue 2 inches of the end of the existing sewer line, as well as the inside of one end of a coupling. Push the glued end of the coupling onto the end of the existing sewer line, holding it for at least 30 seconds.
- 4). Measure from the elbow joint's inside bend to half way along the coupling, cutting a new piece of sewer line to this length. Again, remove all the burrs with a tradesman's knife. Apply glue to the end of the elbow joint, the inside of the coupling and to both ends of the new piece of sewer line.
- 5). Push one end of the new sewer line into the coupling and the other end into the elbow joint. This may take a little force, but should not prove too difficult as the flange has not been screwed into position. Once in place, hold for at least 30 seconds. After this has dried, screw the flange to the bathroom floor with 1 1/2 inch galvanized screws.
