It was essentially required by the system to boost performance of Windows media.
A WMV is a video file, which came into existence due to the requirement of video ready to work on the Microsoft advanced systems format.
WMV extension is based on ASF extension, and collaborates with Windows media file codec to produce the extension.
It is compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems.
Though, you would notice that there are more opportunities for Windows OS to open WMV files.

If you use Mac OS, then you should be aware of the fact that Microsoft media player 9 is the latest and the most updated software application which would produce high-quality video streaming associated with WMV application.
If Windows media player 9 is unavailable, Mac users are advised to use Flip4 Mac to play out WMV extension.
The file extension DAT is different from WMV in at least one respect.
DAT extension is created on its own by the system, while WMV is developed by Microsoft.
DAT extension is basically a binary file.
And if you come across it with text, you could choose to open this extension with the help of any text editor.
However, both DAT and WMV files can be opened on Windows and Mac operating systems.
