How to Hook Up DirecTV for the Whole Home
- 1). Install your DirecTV satellite dish on the exterior of your building or elsewhere on your property. Follow the instructions provided for the satellite dish. Installation steps will vary depending on your model.
- 2). Follow the coordinate guide provided by DirecTV to ensure that your dish is pointed at the correct elevation and azimuth angles. DirecTV's main satellite is located south of Texas, so if you live in Ohio, you’ll point your dish in a southwesterly direction. The dish must have a direct line of sight to the sky without obstruction by trees or buildings.
- 3). Connect your satellite dish to RG-6 coaxial cable.
- 4). Attach the free end of the coaxial cable to a cable splitter. A splitter divides the signal from the dish so it can be run to multiple televisions and receiver boxes; it has a single input on one end and at least two output connectors on the other end.
- 5). Insert additional lengths of coaxial cable into the outputs on the cable splitter.
- 6). Run the individual strands of coaxial cable from the splitter to the various TVs in your home. If you want to install the cable behind the walls, use a slim rod to route the cable to its destination. If you don’t mind having the wires in plain sight, tack them down to the floor or ceiling using U-shaped staples and a staple gun.
- 7). Screw the free end of the coaxial cable into the input port on your DirecTV receiver box. Repeat this step for as many receivers and televisions as you have in your home that need to be hooked up to satellite service.
- 8). Connect your DirecTV receiver box to your television with a short piece of coaxial cable. If you are interfacing a high-definition receiver to an HD television, connect those components using an HDMI cable.
