How do I Build a Gray Water Recycling System?

    • 1). Attach a three-way valve between a washing machine drain and water outlet. The valve has a handle that can divert water either to the outlet or to gray water recycling pipes.

    • 2). Plan the shortest route of irrigation to the outdoor. If the washing machine is on the first floor of your home, this might be a quick route to send water outside. However, if the washer is on an upstairs floor or in the basement, more turns and more pipe might be needed.

The shortest route is from the valve to the wall, down the wall to the outlet, and through the outside wall. This requires the two bends and possibly 6 feet to 8 feet of PVC pipe.

    • 3). Measure the distance from the valve to the upper joint of the pipe facing down. Cut a section of PVC pipe to fit.Wipe PVC cement around one end of the pipe and put one of the threads on the pipe. When it dries, screw the pipe into the three-way valve.

    • 4). Cement one of the 90-degree PVC bends to the other end of the pipe. Measure the distance down the wall and cut a piece of pipe to fit. Cement the pipe into the other end of the elbow joint. Cement the second elbow joint to the bottom of the pipe. Make sure that the opening faces the wall.

    • 5). Drill a 1-1/8-inch hole through the drywall and outside wall while using a flashlight to make sure there are no wires.

    • 6). Measure the distance through both walls. Add 2 inches for the outside spigot. Cut PVC pipe to fit.

    • 7). Push the pipe through the wall and cement the end into the elbow joint. Caulk around the hole in the wall.

    • 8). Outside, cement the second threaded adapter to the PVC pipe that is exposed. Also caulk around the pipe.

    • 9). Attach a hose to the threaded adapter and move the other end it to water a garden or plants. Or, attach a soaking hose to the other end of the hose and place it in a well-mulched garden.
