Types of American Electric Plugs
- The two-pronged electrical plug is the most common type of plug in America and is often found on most home appliances. The two-pronged plug has two flat blades that protrude from the head of the plug. There are usually two small holes towards the end of the blades. Additionally, you'll notice one of the blades fans out slightly towards its end. American electrical outlets take this size differential into consideration and have one prong opening that is slightly larger than the other. This ensures placement of the right blade into the correct side of the outlet.
- The two-pronged electrical plug with the ground connector is the other type of plug commonly used in America. This plug is has two flat blades exactly like the two-pronged plug and also has an ground connector prong. This prong is cylindrical in shape and has a rounded end. Most American outlets have a hole for this prong. In fact, almost all electrical outlets are compatible with both types of electrical plugs. The only time a problem arises is when the electrical outlet does not have a ground connector opening. This usually happens with older electrical outlets.
- You don't have to purchase new electrical equipment if you're traveling to the United States and your appliances are not equipped with compatible plugs. On the contrary, purchase plug adapters that cover your prongs on your electrical plug and convert it to the standard two-pronged plug or the two-pronged plug with ground.
- Another consideration is voltage. Voltage can vary greatly from country to country. The electrical appliances you use are specifically made to handle the voltage in your own country. This means that there is a chance your appliance will not work in America, even if you have a plug adapter. Check the electrical appliances for its voltage. The electricity in America is 120 volts. If your appliance says something different, you'll have to purchase a voltage converter for your appliance to work. The voltage converter is the best option for people that travel internationally on a regular basis. If you travel internationally infrequently, purchasing new electronics will be the most cost-effective route.
