Archimedes needed a way to pump the water out of the hull of a ship he designed for Heiron II so he designed a large screw inside of a cylinder. The screw was turned by hand in order to remove the water. This invention is used even today in some developing countries to irrigate crop fields. - Giant mirrors defended Syracuse from Rome by catching by catching Roman ships on fire.Photos.com/Photos.com/Getty Images
Archimedes set up mirrors along the edge of Syracuse to defend the city against Roman ships. The mirrors were large and caught the sun's reflection, projecting them onto the ships and catching them on fire. According to John Zonaras, a 12th century historian, this invention destroyed the entire fleet of Roman ships. - The Archimedes Claw was used to overturn enemy ships during battle. The claw was build like a crane with giant hooks attached to ropes. These hooks grabbed onto the enemy ship, reportedly lifting it high into the air and shaking it violently until the ship lost it's crew and the boat itself was dropped on the rocks and crushed.

Although the lever had been used by others before Archimedes, the great mathematician was able to scientifically prove how it was able to move objects with the sufficient amount of effort applied in ratio to the fulcrum of the lever. Archimedes reportedly bragged that if he stood in the correct spot, he would be able to move the entire world with his lever.
