How to Update the BIOS on an HP Computer
- 1). Write down the HP computer model number. This should be listed on the computer documentation that came with the computer or on a sticker on the PC itself. If you can't find it, type "HP System Information" in the Windows Search bar (or "Run" bar for XP users) and press "Enter".
- 2). Click "View System Information details" listed at the bottom of the HP System information pop-up. The Model type will be listed under "System Model".
- 3). Write down the BIOS version and date using the same System Information pop-up. It will be listed under "Bios Version/Date".
- 4). Go to the HP downloads page (see Resources) and type in your computer's model number. Select the version of Windows you are running at the next screen. A download page will list all the newest updates for your computer.
- 5). Scroll down to the "BIOS" section of the Downloads page and select the most recent BIOS update. Click on the download button on the following page to download the self-updating .exe file.
- 6). Check the BIOS update instructions to make sure that your computer is prepared for the update. You might need to update other devices before the BIOS update will work.
- 7). Close all programs. If you have a laptop, be sure that is connected to a power source before attempting to install the update. If the battery dies midway through the update, your computer might not start up.
- 8). Run the BIOS update file you downloaded earlier by double-clicking on the .exe file. The HP BIOS update will self-install and restart your computer.
