How to Create Heat Race Brackets
- 1). Choose how many brackets will be filled by single participants or participant teams allowed in your race. The number you decide on must be an even number. A good number to decide on is eight or 16. Too many participant brackets will make the event last longer and will cause more responsibility for race organizers to keep everything organized.
- 2). Select how you will distinguish who moves forward in the event. You can set up a single elimination bracket, where each participant competes against one other and moves forward in the bracket with each victory. A loss would mean the participant is out of the competition. If you create a double-elimination bracket, winners and losers will branch off and compete against each other in winner and loser brackets. The final elimination competes the winner of the "winner" bracket and the winner of the "loser" bracket together. The double bracket allows for more races and participants get to try again for success.
- 3). Select how initial brackets are chosen. You have several options. One option is a blind selection where participants are chosen to race against each other based on a random selection of their name by hand or by computer selection. Another is done by evaluating some form of prior performance. For example, in an eight-participant bracket the participant with the best prior time might be raced against the participant with the worst time.
- 4). Hold your first heat race. If you are doing a single elimination bracket, then only winning participants will move on. If you have created a bracket of 16 then you will now have eight races for the second heat. If you have bracket of 16 with a double elimination, then all losers from the first heat will form a new bracket of eight additional races.
- 5). Hold your second heat. At the conclusion of a single elimination bracket there will be four races remaining. With a double elimination bracket you will have four races in the winner's bracket and four races in the loser's bracket. At this point only winners in either bracket move forward.
- 6). Hold your third heat. If you are running a single elimination bracket you will now be in the semi final stage. Winners of this will go to the championship race. In a double elimination third heat you are also finding finalists for the championship of the losers bracket.
