How to Copy VHS Tapes to My Computer
- 1). Connect the three plugs on one end of the composite cable to the matching yellow, white and red "out" jacks on the back of the videocassette recorder. Insert the plugs on the other end into the color-coded jacks on the converter box.
- 2). Attach the USB cable from the port on the converter box to any USB port on the computer.
- 3). Insert a videotape in the VCR and cue the cassette to the desired position to begin copying.
- 4). Open the recording software that came with the converter box by clicking on the name of the program from the list of all programs stored on the computer.
- 5). Press the "Play" button on the VCR and click on the "Record" button on the computer screen to begin converting and recording the videotape to the computer. Click the software "Stop" button when finished.
- 6). Click on "File" in the upper left corner of the window for your recording program to reveal a drop-down menu, then select "Save" and choose "Save as MPEG" or another video file format, depending on how the file will be used. MPEG is a suitable file for burning DVDs.
- 7). Type a name for the new digital video recording and click "Save."
