Locate an office supply store or a electronics store like Fry's where you know you will have plenty of surge protectors to choose from. The more numbers of brands and types available, the better for you as you will have a better chance of finding what you want.

Read the packaging carefully to make sure the surge protectors you are looking at are indeed surge protectors and not just a power strip. Some power strips provide surge protection as well, but many do not, so make sure what you are picking up

Check the information on the box and see if the brand offers insurance if the surge protector fails to work and ruins the computer or other more delicate equipment. This is an important feature to consider as a computer or other highly technical equipment will be pricey to replace should the surge protection fail.

Spend the money to get a good surge protector. Avoid trying to save money on buying the cheapest surge protector out there. Cost should not be an issue when you consider saving your computer from harm.
