  Blackwater Falls in Davis, West Virginia, is one of the most photographed sites in the state. The falls get its name from the amber water of the Blackwater River, colored by the tannic acid from fallen hemlock and red spruce needles. These majestic falls plummet five stories into a meandering eight-mile gorge below. Blackwater Falls State Park has a variety of activities year-round, such as fishing, swimming, hiking, boating, skiing and sledding.

• For visitors wishing to stay within the park, Blackwater Falls offers 26 furnished cabins, with wood paneling, an open fireplace, a full kitchen and a full bath with shower. The cabins, in a wooded area about a mile from the park's main lodge, are available year-round. Travelers with pets can reserve one of the three pet-friendly cabins, first come, first served. Reservations are accepted up to one year in advance, and senior citizens get a discount on their stay.

Canaan Valley Resort

• Canaan Valley Resort, just 15 miles from Blackwater Falls, offers 23 cabins and cottages with two, three or four bedrooms that can sleep from four to 12 adults. Each cabin has a wood-burning fireplace, with wood provided; a full kitchen with utensils; linens; and baseboard heating. In addition to the features provided in the cabins, the 12-person cottages also have a dishwasher and microwave, telephone, cable TV and wireless high-speed Internet. Housekeeping services are available for both the cabins and cottages. Canaan Valley Resort is pet-friendly with verification of current vaccination records and an additional fee per night. Golden Anchor Cabins

• Golden Anchor Cabins, 18 miles from Blackwater Falls, in Dryfork, West Virginia, offers three cabin styles: the hillside cabin, the honeymoon cabin and the pond-view cabin. The hillside and pond-view cabins are designed for families, with a loft bedroom upstairs and two bedrooms with twin beds on the lower level. The honeymoon cabins have showers for two, a gas log fireplace and an enclosed outdoor hot tub.
