• The Naval Station Great Lakes, located approximately 40 miles north of downtown Chicago, since 1911, has prepared soldiers and sailors for the duties and rigors of military life. As of 1994, every member of Navy attends basic training at this facility. The base is located in the city of North Chicago along Lake Michigan. • The Red Carpet Inn in North Chicago puts guests one block west of the Chicago naval base. The hotel caters especially to military families as it provides a free shuttle service to and from RTC graduations at the naval base.
