How to Draw the Foot

    • 1). Decide on the type of foot you'd like to create, including the position of the foot. Find an image of a foot in that position to help you with your drawing. Use an image showing the inside foot from the side, for example, and use it as your main reference. Place it beside your paper so you can easily examine detailed areas as you draw.

    • 2). Draw a line starting at the back, down past the ankle area. Draw a rounded line around the heel and along the bottom of the foot. Draw the outline of the toes starting with the big toe. Draw the other toes getting smaller with one line separating each toe. Draw these lines accurately to indicate the knuckles. Continue with the outline around the top to where it meets the leg. Continue outlining the leg just above the ankle.

    • 3). Detail the outline by indicating the arch and ball of the foot just behind the toes. Make sure the heel curves outward from the leg and then in to the arch. Draw a horizontal line at the back of the leg just above the ankle to indicate the muscle. Draw the ankle itself with a lower half circle.

    • 4). Draw the horizontal lines of the bones extending into the foot from the toes. Draw these by extending the toe separation lines with a lighter line. Draw these about the length of the toes. Closely examine your reference image to continue adding more details of bone and muscle structures in the foot. Detail the toes by adding nails. Carefully outline the shapes to keep the proper perspective.

    • 5). Shade the underside of the foot including the bottom of the arch, ball and big toe. Note that only the tops of the other toes are visible. Shade the back of the leg and around the ankle to create depth in your drawing. Blend these areas using a chamois by gently rubbing it along the foot. Keep shading until the foot begins to look realistic.

    • 6). Create clean lines by rubbing out any excess shading with the eraser. Fine-tune your detail lines using the reference image as a guide.
