How to Remove Skim From Paint

    • 1). Place the container of paint on an absorbent canvas drop cloth. Don't use a cheap plastic polypropylene drop cloth, or paint splatters will pool up.

    • 2). Open the container of paint. Carefully break the skim away from the edges of the container, using a metallic putty knife. Scoop as much of the skim from the container as possible, using the putty knife.

    • 3). Insert a paint strainer netting into the 5-gallon plastic bucket and attach the top edges to the bucket rim.

    • 4). Lift the container of paint by the handle, using your left hand. Position the container over the strainer. Grasp the bottom of the container with your right hand. Gently lift the bottom of the container toward you until the top of the container tilts forward, allowing a narrow stream of paint to pour into the strainer. Pour slowly, maintaining a steady narrow stream; do not dump the paint quickly, or the fine strainer mesh will clog and the paint will overflow.

    • 5). Set the container of paint down. Grasp the edges of the strainer and slowly lift it to allow more paint to drain into the 5-gallon bucket. Collect the edges of the strainer in one hand and twist the strainer shut at the top. Use your other hand to massage the remaining paint through the strainer.
