How to Save Frozen Paint
- 1). Take the frozen paint can or bucket into a room at room temperature. Let the paint defrost slowly over time. Do no heat the paint to speed up the defrosting. Depending on how frozen the paint is, it can take several days for it to unfreeze. Stir the closed paint can every few hours to see if the paint has become unfrozen. You will hear the paint moving and swirling around in liquid form when it has defrosted.
- 2). Open the paint can with the screwdriver. Pry open the can every 1 inch until the top of the can comes off. If it is in a bucket, pry it open with your hands.
- 3). Stir the paint thoroughly with the paint mixing stick until the paint is one uniform color. If you cannot mix it into one uniform color then take the paint can to a paint store so they can mix it for you in a mixer.
- 4). Visually inspect the paint. If the paint is full of specks or flakes, has dry paint inside of it or the color is not the same as the one you ordered, you will likely have to properly dispose of the paint and buy new paint.
- 5). Paint a small area, around 1 foot by 1 foot with the paintbrush. Let the area dry for at least one hour and inspect the color. Is the paint the same color as the one you ordered and is the paint peeling? If so, you must dispose of the paint. If the color is fine and the paint is not peeling then you can safely use the unfrozen paint.
