How to Use Clay-Based Paint in a Wagner Sprayer
- 1). Unscrew the cup from a Wagner power sprayer and fill it about 2/3 full with clay-based paint.
- 2). Pour water into the cup until it is 3/4 full of material, then stir the mixture thoroughly with a stir stick. Screw the cup back onto the sprayer.
- 3). Plug in the sprayer and test the pattern on a piece of scrap cardboard. Hold the tip about 6 inches from the surface and press the trigger while you move the gun in a steady motion, either side-to-side or up and down. Rotate the nozzle so the fan splays out perpendicular to the direction you move the gun. You should get a solid coat of paint, without runs, along the path of the spray.
- 4). Thin the paint with more water if the spray is too thin, or if it is chunky. Add more paint to the mixture, or hold the gun further from the surface, if the paint is runny and creates drips. Clay paint is unlikely to drip unless it is grossly over-thinned.
- 5). Spray the surface you want to paint once you are satisfied with the spray pattern, adding more paint and water to the cup as needed to finish the job. When you are done, empty the contents back into the can and fill the cup with water. Spray the water through the nozzle for about 30 seconds, then pour it out and wipe the cup with a rag. Remove the tip and soak it in in water for about 15 to 30 minutes before you wipe it dry with the rag.
