How to Cage a Tomato

    • 1). Choose the correct tomato cage for the type of tomato plant you are growing. The best choice for all tomato plants is the square-shaped cage. These are tall enough, and have the additional advantage of folding for storage when not in use. Conical tomato cages work with smaller varieties of tomatoes, but do not provide sufficient support for taller indeterminate varieties.

    • 2). Unfold the tomato cage so that it is square-shaped, if using this type.

    • 3). Right after the tomato seedling has emerged, or the plant has been transplanted, place the tomato cage over the tomato plant, with the plant in the center of the cage.

    • 4). Firmly push the tomato cage into the ground, being careful not to puncture the roots of the tomato plant.

    • 5). Once the tomato cage has been pushed as far as possible into the ground, hammer the top of the cage until the legs are 6 inches in the ground.

    • 6). Check the growing tomato plant weekly, and guide any branches on the plant through the next-highest level of the tomato cage.
