How to Plant Pineapples
- 1). Remove the top of a whole pineapple by twisting off the crown. Discard any fruity flesh that may still be attached to the leafy top. Trim this area to expose the small round structures at the bottom of the crown, which are the root buds.
- 2). Dry the crown for about a week, in a shaded area. Lay the crown upside down while drying.
- 3). Cover the hole of an 8-inch clay pot with a piece of broken, curved pottery and then cover with about an inch of gravel. The purpose of the broken pottery is to keep the gravel from slipping out of the pot. The purpose of the gravel is to help the soil drain well.
- 4). Fill the pot with potting soil and plant the crown. The green leafy part of the crown should be exposed. Tap the soil firmly around the crown when planting. Keep the dirt out of the green leaves.
- 5). Keep the pot in a sunny window. Transplant the pineapple to a 12-inch pot when the plant outgrows the container. Leave in the window or plant the pot in the garden during the summer. Water the pineapple about once a week.
