How to Propagate Oakleaf Hydrangeas
- 1). Snip a branch with pruning shears, cutting it to 5 or 6 inches long. Take the cutting from a branch that did not develop flowers this year if possible.
- 2). Strip the leaves off the lower two leaf nodes.
- 3). Chop the larger leaves to around half their size.
- 4). Lightly coat the cutting with rooting hormone, then place the bottom of the cutting in a pot filled with damp, coarse sand.
- 5). Give the plant plenty of water and make sure it drains through the bottom of the pot. Keep it moist but not saturated.
- 6). Place a sheet of clear plastic over the plant and the pot, without touching the plant leaves. Add small wooden stakes if necessary to keep the plastic from touching.
- 7). Watch for the cutting to form roots in two to three weeks. Tug on the cutting to see if it is rooting. If it resists, it is developing roots.
