How to Plant Oak-Leaf Hydrangea

    • 1). Buy oak-leaf hydrangea at a garden center or nursery in summer when it's blooming, so that you can enjoy it fully in its first year. Look for the leaf shape (much like an oak, but slightly furry) and the bloom shape (cylindrical).

    • 2). Amend soil with equal parts peat and sand to each part existing soil if your yard is clay-based. Your chosen planting site should receive dappled light or full shade all day, for best results.

    • 3). Put on gloves and dig a hole large enough to accommodate the root ball of the hydrangea plant.

    • 4). Fill a bucket with water and pour half into the hole to ease transplant shock to the shrub's roots.

    • 5). Remove the hydrangea from its pot or burlap wrapping, and set it in the hole. Remove it and add soil if the base of the trunk sits below the soil line. Repeat this process until the base of the trunk sits above the soil line at least an inch, to allow for settling.

    • 6). Stand back and check to be sure the plant is standing straight, and adjust it if necessary.

    • 7). Fill in the sides of the planting hole with soil, tamping it down firmly with your foot to remove air spaces around the roots.

    • 8). Water in thoroughly.
