How to Paint Unfinished Pine
- 1). Examine the surface of the wood to look for any cracks or large holes. Apply a small amount of wood filler to each large crack or hole on the pine's surface. Allow the putty to dry completely.
- 2). Sand the entire surface of the wood, including the areas where you applied putty, using a small square of sandpaper. Wear work gloves to protect your hands from scrapes. The goal is to create a completely even surface for the primer and paint to adhere to.
- 3). Use a large paintbrush to cover the entire surface of the pine in an even coat of primer paint. Use long, even strokes. Allow the primer to dry for at least two hours. The surface should not be tacky or sticky. If it is still tacky, allow it to dry longer.
- 4). Apply a coat of latex paint. A high-gloss paint creates that shiny, finished texture. A matte paint creates a subtle, soft effect. After the first coat has dried, apply a second coat to cover any thinly painted areas. Allow the pine to dry completely in a cool, dry area.
