How to Repot Lemon Trees
- 1). Select a pot that is 25 percent larger than the one you are currently using. The new pot needs to have adequate drainage on the bottom.
- 2). Remove your lemon tree from its current pot. Use a spade or small shovel to loosen the dirt around the edges of the pot, then gently rock the tree from side to side by gripping the tree with one hand and holding the pot in place with your other hand. When the tree and its roots are loose enough, gently pull it straight up and out of the pot.
- 3). Shake the tree gently to knock loose dirt away from the roots. Use your hands to remove some of the dirt and soil from between the roots, taking care not to damage the delicate roots in the process.
- 4). Trim about 25 percent of the length from the roots if they appear crowded or have started growing in circles around the bottom of the pot.
- 5). Fill the new pot with 1 inch of gravel or rocks to help with drainage. Pour 1 to 3 inches of commercial potting soil on top of the gravel. Fill the pot with enough soil that the root ball will sit about 4 inches below the top of the pot.
- 6). Set the tree in the new pot and slowly fill the pot with your potting soil. Pack the dirt around the root ball as you go.
- 7). Fill the dirt to 1 inch above the top of the root ball.
- 8). Water the lemon tree immediately after repotting.
