How to Design Artificial Flowers

    • 1). Select the location for the flower arrangement. Where the flower arrangement is placed determines the height of the vase, how many flowers you'll need and whether the flowers will be viewed from the front, such as on an entryway table, or from all sides, such as on a coffee table.

    • 2). Prepare the container or vase. Use dry floral foam to hold the flowers in place in shallow containers. Cut the floral foam to the same size as the container but an inch shallower. Put a few dabs of hot glue on the bottom and sides of the container. Immediately push the floral foam in. The foam will compact a little and fit snugly.

    • 3). Cover the top of the foam with sphagnum moss. Tuck the moss down the sides of the container with a dull knife.

    • 4). Cut the stems of the greenery in three different lengths: tall, medium and short. For a medium size arrangement, try 12 inches, 8 inches and 4 inches. Cut the stems of the silk flowers to one inch less than the greenery.

    • 5). Push the tall stems of the greenery in the center of the container. Angle the stems slightly outward. View from all sides to see if the stems are evenly spaced.

    • 6). Push the medium stems of the greenery around the tall stems toward the outside of the container. Finish with the short stems around the perimeter. Save a few of the shorter stems to place among the medium height greenery. Save some of the medium height greenery to place in the tall greenery. Intermingling the heights this way is more attractive. Check for even placement and adjust if necessary.

    • 7). Bend tall sprays of flowers like snapdragons, larkspur and delphiniums so they softly curve. That looks more natural then ram-rod straight stems. Place the large silk flowers among the greenery first. Angle the flowers so you're looking at the face of the flower rather than the sides. Follow with the medium-size flowers. Check for even placement. Fill in with the small flowers.

    • 8). Adjust a few of flowers so they curve over the lip of the container.
