- 1). Cut a piece of mesh screen to the same diameter as the bottom of the 12-inch pot and lay it in the bottom of the pot to keep soil from falling out of the drainage holes. Place the pot in your sunniest window in late spring or early summer.
- 2). Place a 3 foot garden stake in the pot. The stake will provide a surface for vining squash to climb, though selecting a bush variety would be better for indoor gardening.
- 3). Fill the pot with a mixture of one part compost, one part potting soil, and one part each of perlite and peat moss. Hold the stake upright as you fill the pot.
- 4). Poke a hole in the potting mixture 1/2 inch deep. Place the seed into the hole and cover it with soil.
- 5). Water the soil until it settles. Continue watering whenever the soil feels dry to the touch.
- 6). Apply a water soluble 20-20-20 fertilizer to the soil once a week. Apply after watering.
- 7). Harvest the squashes when they are no more than 6 to 8 inches long, and 2 inches in diameter. They will still be tender at that size.
