How Long Does it Take to Germinate Lemon Balm?
- Whether you start lemon balm seeds indoors, 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost for your area, or directly into the soil outside, germination can take from 12 to 21 days. Once the seeds have sprouted, you should be able to transplant after another three weeks of growth. For best results, lemon balm needs a well-draining clay or sandy soil with full sunlight. If you live in a dry climate, however, it is recommended that you plant your lemon balm in partial shade.
- Lemon balm needs constantly moist soil in order to thrive. Never let soil dry out completely between waterings. At full size, the lemon balm plant will reach 12 to 18 inches in height and will self-seed if not deadheaded after bloom. Lemon balm can become invasive if left unattended, so monitor growth and blooms carefully to control the population.
