What Growing Conditions Does Honeysuckle Need?
- Honeysuckle plants grow mostly as shrubs or twining vines. Honeysuckle shrubs grow 6 to 15 feet tall and vines can grow 10 to 20 feet high. Both types bloom in spring and summer and will have trumpet-shaped flowers. Flower colors include red, white, yellow, and orange.
- Honeysuckles require little care after they have become established in the garden. The root of the plants should not dry out or pests will attack them. Water honeysuckle once every week unless more than 1 inch of rain has fallen.
- While they love full sun, honeysuckles will tolerate some shade. When planting, correct any excessively poor soil, but otherwise the honeysuckle plant can adapt.
- Pruning should only be done to shape honeysuckle shrubs or to keep vines from growing out of bounds. Shrubs work well as privacy hedges and vines can be trained to grow up fences, archways, and other objects.
