How do I Make a Concrete Garden Planter?
- 1). Create two plywood molds between which you will pour the prepared concrete mix for the rectangular planter. Determine the length, height and width of the planter. Mark the dimensions for the two long sides, the base and the two short sides of each mold on the plywood sheet. Keep the measurements of the inner mold 2 to 3 inches smaller than those of the larger, outer mold so that the concrete planter is 2 to 3 inches thick.
- 2). Cut over the marks on the plywood sheet with a circular saw. Separate the boards for each mold to avoid confusing them.
- 3). Glue each mold's adjacent long sides to a base, followed by the shorter sides. Press each side firmly to the base after applying glue so that it forms a strong and secure bond.
- 4). Insert the inner mold in the outer one and drill a hole with a 1-inch diameter through the bases of both molds. This hole assists in drainage to prevent root rot of the contained plants. Remove the inner mold and set it aside.
- 5). Insert the 1-inch-wide plastic tubing through the hole in the base of the larger mold. Spray an even coat of cooking oil over the four sides and base of this mold to help lubricate it. This lets the cured concrete planter slide out easily. Also, spray around the plastic tubing.
Flip the inner mold and place it base-up on a table. Spray an even layer of cooking oil over its four outer sides and base. - 6). Add water to the concrete mix until it has the consistency of ice cream. Pour it carefully into the outer mold until it forms a 2-inch layer. Shake the mold gently to level the top of the concrete.
- 7). Place the inner mold inside the outer one until it rests evenly over the concrete on its base. Pour concrete between the sides of the inner and outer molds until it is an inch from the edge or rim. Level the top of the concrete with a trowel.
- 8). Allow the concrete planter to cure or dry for 24 hours. Once dry, carefully pull the plastic tubing out. Tilt the planter to one side and gently pat it to loosen both forms. Gently slide the forms out, one at a time. Place the planter in a shaded spot and allow it to dry for five to seven days before planting in it.
