    Inside Vent

    • Always unplug your dryer before cleaning the exhaust vent to prevent electrocution. Detach the dryer hose from the vent in the wall behind the dryer. Vacuum the hose, or use a stiff-bristled brush to clean excess lint out of the dryer hose. Clean the floor around the back of the dryer to prevent lint particles on the floor from heating up and catching fire. Vacuum out the inside vent. Dryer lint can clog and damage many household vacuums, so use an industrial vacuum if possible. Reattach the vent hose to the dryer and wall before cleaning the exterior vent.

    Exterior Vent

    • Vacuum the pipe leading to the outside dryer vent, or clean it out with a broom or a brush made for cleaning dryer vents. Dryer vent cleaning kits are available at most home improvement and hardware stores. The exterior dryer vent will be nailed or screwed to the outside of your home. Carefully remove the exterior vent and vacuum it out to remove any lint buildup. Reattach the vent securely, and run your dryer to make sure the warm exhaust is making it to the outside.

    Professional Cleaning

    • You may prefer to hire a professional service to clean your dryer vent and ductwork. Many local providers will come to your home and thoroughly clean your dryer vent and ductwork. Costs for a professional cleaning service vary by location but typically run anywhere between $75 and $200. Many companies offer packages in which dryer vent cleaning is part of a bundle of other services, such as heating- and cooling-duct cleaning or chimney sweeping.
