Mighty Putty Vs. Gorilla Glue
- The first noticeable difference between Mighty Putty and Gorilla Glue is that Mighty Putty was first made available through television infomercials, and it was endorsed by the late Billy Mays, who was better known as the spokesman for Oxy Clean. While the product is moving onto commercial store shelves (in 2009), it was initially only available direct from the manufacturer. By contrast, Gorilla Glue is available in most major home improvement stores and retail manufacturers. In 2009, Mighty Putty sells for around $10 for three tubes, while Gorilla Glue sells a single tube for under $5.
- Prior to Mighty Putty's availability in stores, some consumers reported that delivery turnaround times were slow. Since Mighty Putty is not available in all stores, some consumers may still have to rely on the Internet for ordering Mighty Putty. Gorilla Glue is available commercially in most hardware or big box discount stores.
- Mighty Putty comes in a stick form. These sticks come with an inner base substance that is grey in color and an outer, hardener substance that is green. Both of these substances are claylike in consistency. Kneading them together activates the putty for use. Gorilla glue's epoxy formula is more liquid in consistency. Two tubes must be measured and mixed, although the dual applicator with joined plunger makes this relatively simple. The epoxy mixes as a glue-like bonding agent.
- Both putties claim to bond to a variety of surfaces, including ceramic tile, wood, glass, concrete, metal and plastic. The putties are both reportedly good at filling cracks and gaps, and both are reportedly paintable. Unlike other putties, Gorilla Glue claims that its epoxy will not become brittle and break with time. Gorilla Glue was named by Popular Mechanics as one of its list of best items for its yearly hardware show. Mighty Putty claims that its product will cure underwater.
- According to many consumers, there are less expensive forms of the same type of putty that have been available in hardware stores for years. While Mighty Putty takes 40 minutes to harden, Gorilla Glue claims to harden within 5 minutes.
